In highway asphalt pavement construction, milling and paving are often used together to restore worn surfaces, correct profile issues, and prepare the roadway for a new overlay. Pavement milling, also called cold planing or asphalt milling, can remove only the thickness needed for leveling and smoothing or extend to full-depth removal, depending on project requirements. This method is commonly chosen because it can address rutting, raveling, bleeding, uneven ride quality, and grade-related drainage issues before new asphalt is placed.
